Hi all, I'm at the end of my rope here. I've been unemployed for 6 months and will take almost anything. I've been sending out resumes everyday and have received 2 phone calls. If anyone has any leads for a position (I'm in the near north suburbs but can take the train downtown) I would be so very thankful! I'm also wondering if anyone works at or has a connection within Baxter. I completed an application with them last week and would love for them just to look at it.
Thank you for all your help!
Sincerely,
Dena Solomon

Have you tried: Becoming a MOS; CSP, CAD; taking a few courses at your local community college; or volunteering (either local YMC/JA with the disabled or clerical work for a local religious/charity/political office. Any movement could set you above the others. (& Yes, I'm unemployed also.)

Thank you all for your encouragement! It has been 10 months and not 1 interview! I signed up with a temp agency and actually scored in the advanced level in word, excel, etc but still no calls!
If anyone has an open position (one can wish)I'm in Riverwoods, IL, about 20 miles northeast of Chicago and am happy to work any hours, in any industry, as long as I receive health benefits.
Thanks for your suggestions and support!
Be well,
Dena

You poor thing! Try a staffing agency! I swear by them! I tell anyone looking for work to utilize a temp agency's services---it doesn't matter the education level or industry! A Miami, FL temp agency got me into Admin! I was an out of work (and burned out )Social Worker! It was the best work decision I have ever made! Agencies can get you into fabulous companies you never dreamt existed without the fuss and the muss of stressful interviews and the 'waiting game'.
Enlist the help of at least local 3 agencies ( don't let them know you are with other offices)---juggle them and use the one that gets you work faster! You run the risk of burning bridges by throwing over certain agencies for another, but you live in a large city so your reputation won't be ruined.
Good luck.

Hi Dena -
It's a tough market out there, but the career groups that I belong to have been having a great deal of success using Linkedin.com. Have you listed there yet? If you do, you can search for current & past employees at Baxter (or other companies you would like a foot in the door with), and they will usually be happy to exchange information, tips & tricks, etc., with you.
Another thought - have you had your resume professionally reviewed and/or written? In a tough market, that can sometimes be the difference to repacking successfully to stand out against other candidates.
Best of luck to you in your search!

In my post below, the word should be "something" and not sometimes. I was in a hurry and did not follow the cardinal rule of proofreading!

Unfortunately, the job market is really tough right now. So many companies are closing or having layoffs. Maybe consider taking sometimes out of your usual line of work, just to get some income flowing. That will relieve some stress, and you could continue to send resumes out and seek the position you truly want. I wish you all the luck.

Dena,
Have you applied for the position on the job board at this website for JP Morgan Chase. It was posted on 11/21/08. Also consider visiting the job board at www.iaap-hq.org. Another site that may be helpful that specializes in administrative positions only (there is a membership charge) is www.ihiresecretarial.com. I often see great opportunities posted there for California. You will have to research and see if that is available in Illinois.
Good luck and don't despair. Remember an important part of doing well in an interview is to be positive and upbeat. Desparity shows through every time and employers do not want to hire it. I know it is hard, however with practice it becomes easier.

Have you tried calling and following up on your resumes. I know that in my office when someone calls to inquire on a resume that they have submitted it ends up being pulled from the stack and reveiwed again. I have seen my office manager call that person back for an interview simply because they followed up and showed assertiveness. Also, try calling HR and get the name of the person who will be conducting the interview. Resend your resume with a cover letter addressed to that person. It shows that you did your homework and have taken the time to find out a little about the company. Good luck and stay positive the perfect job for you is right around the corner.

Hi. Have you tried temp services? I know they are not a permanent solution, but it may get you through the holidays! Good luck on your search.
